Patty melts are a classic comfort food that combines juicy beef, gooey cheese, and sweet caramelized onions on crispy toasted bread. Perfect for any meal or gathering!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 4 slices thick sliced bread (sourdough or rye)
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Gather ingredients: Thinly slice the onion and form ground beef into four evenly sized patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Caramelize the onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add onions and cook until golden brown (about 15 minutes).
  3. Cook the patties: In another skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Cook the seasoned patties for 4-5 minutes per side until cooked through.
  4. Melt the cheese: Place a slice of cheddar on each patty just before removing from heat, covering briefly to melt.
  5. Toast the bread: Butter one side of each bread slice and toast in a clean skillet until golden brown (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  6. Assemble: Stack each cheeseburger patty on a slice of toasted bread, top with caramelized onions, and finish with another slice of toast.

Notes

  • Customize your patty melts by using different cheeses like Swiss or pepper jack for added flavor.
  •  For a healthier option, substitute ground beef with turkey or plant-based meat alternatives.
  •  To prevent soggy bread, ensure it is well-toasted before adding the filling.
